Fifth time lucky: Spain wins first European handball championship after losing four finals in 21 years

SPAIN has won the European men's handball championship in Croatia after finishing as runners-up in four previous tournaments.
Fifth time lucky for Spain: its first-ever and long-awaited gold medal looked as though it would never come, given that the national team, Los Hispanos, had made it to the finals in 1996, 1998, 2006 and 2016, losing to Russia, Sweden, France and Germany respectively and taking home the silver.
Los Hispanos also got through to the semi-finals in 2000 and 2014, but again lost and took home the bronze medal.
But this time, despite being 14-16 down at half-time, a late surge saw Spain beat Sweden, who got through to the final after a surprise win against Denmark in the semis.
Los Hispanos were described as a 'whirlwind' in the second half, scoring four times in quick succession, which gave them the confidence they needed to forge ahead.
Sweden struggled against Spain's new-found determination, and a late flurry of goals from both sides widened the latter's advantage the match ended up 29-23 to Los Hispanos.
Sweden has little to complain about, however, as it still holds the record for the most European championship gold medals on the continent, having clinched the title in 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2002.
Spain's Alex Dujshebaev also won best leftfielder and Ferrán Solé best rightfielder, having scored four and five goals apiece.
Behind Sweden with the silver, France took the bronze medal after beating Denmark 32-29.
