The epicentre was in the town of Olvera, and the tremor struck at exactly 02.52.
Given that the quake was 11 kilometres underground, the effects were barely felt on the surface and those few people who noticed it would not have realised what was happening until they heard about it in the news.
Normally, a quake of 3.4 closer to the surface would cause a split second's strong trembling, but be unlikely to cause damage except minor issues with very precarious structures, as its magnitude is similar to that of a very heavy lorry passing at high speed.
According to the regional emergency 112 hotline centre in Andalucía, no calls were received as a result, and no damage or injury reported.
