OUTER space and the Bronze Age do not sit well in the same sentence – they may both have existed at the same time, but anyone based on Earth back then would not have known much, or anything, about what lies beyond.
MRI scanning drug recalled by EU
28/02/2018
A DRUG used in MRI scans will be withdrawn from use in Spain from March 12 after the European Union warned it carries a risk of leaving chemical deposits on the brain.
According to the Spanish Agency for Medications and Healthcare Products (AEMPS), the drug retailed as 'Omniscan' by the laboratory GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences is the only one used in Spain in which the principal ingredient is gadodiamide.
It releases gadolinium in higher quantities than other drugs used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and patients are at risk of deposits of the chemical element being left on their brains.
The European Union says the risk outweighs the benefits, and has instructed Spain to cease using it.
From March 12 this year, hospitals will not be permitted to continue using their stocks of Omniscan and are required to return them to the laboratory from which they were acquired.
Other MRI drugs the EU has ordered the removal of due to the risk of chemical deposits – gadopentetic acid and gadoversethamide – are not used in Spanish hospitals, the AEMPS confirms.
