FOUR Spanish women have been killed in a car crash in Florida Keys, according to police in the area.
Teresa Sánchez Quetglas, María López-Bermejo Roselló and Margarita Cortés-Pardo, from Mallorca, and Ana Gaitán Díaz, from Córdoba, all lost their lives outright.
Other than Teresa, who was 30, the others were aged 31.
Witnesses say their Nissan Rogue attempted to turn in the road and the lorry behind them driven by local resident Carlos Manso, 30, and carrying portable toilets was unable to stop in time.
They were shunted into the opposite lane where Alaska-born Daniel Pinkerton, 62, in his campervan was unable to avoid hitting them.
All drivers tested negative for alcohol consumption and were all wearing seatbelts.
The two men were treated for minor injuries in hospital, but the women were all killed outright.
Monroe County Sheriff Adam Linhardt said emergency service helicopters were sent out 'but unfortunately, we did not have to use them' because 'the victims were already dead'.
José Sánchez, Federal Highway Police spokesman for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, which cover the Keys islands, said an 'active' inquiry is open to find out whether the women's deaths is an 'involuntary homicide' rather than accidental – a process which could delay the process of the victims' being repatriated.
As a result of the crash, the highway that links mainland Florida with the Keys was blocked completely for several hours.
