A BRITISH woman rescued from the sea during an Ironman triathlon in Marbella has died in hospital.
The tough competition involved 1.9 kilometres of swimming in the sea, followed immediately by 90 kilometres cycling and then a half-marathon – 21 kilometres or 13 miles – running.
Winner of the men's category was also British, David MacNamee, and Germany's Laura Philipp won the women's section.
The deceased, who has not been identified, went into cardiac arrest during the first phase of the Ironman 70.3, the swimming, and was pulled out of the water and given CPR.
Paramedics managed to restart her pulse and breathing, but she remained unconscious, and was rushed to the Costa del Sol hospital in neighbouring Málaga.
She was said to be brain-dead upon arrival as her system had been starved of oxygen for too long, meaning she had no chance of recovery.
Today (Monday), the day after the triathlon, she passed away in intensive care.
It is believed she was an expat living on the Costa del Sol.
The Ironman 70.3 was the first date of the European circuit of the planet's most challenging triathlons, and the 2,500 contestants in Marbella were competing for points to earn themselves one of the 50 places in the Ironman World Championship final, due to take place in September in South Africa.
