Real Madrid to meet Liverpool in Champions League final
03/05/2018
Real Madrid will face Liverpool in the Champions League final in Kiev on May 26th after the Premiership side beat Roma 7-6 on aggregate despite losing a dramatic second leg in Rome on Wednesday night.
Defending champions and 12-time winners Real Madrid will be contesting their 16th final and hoping to notch up a third title in a row to match Bayern Munich's 1974-1976 record.
Liverpool will be playing their eighth final in total, and their first since 2007. After winning the first leg at Anfield 5-2, Jürgen Klopp's men conceded three times in the second half at the Stadio Olimpico to lose (4-2) for the first time in the competition this season, but sealed their passage to the final to the delight of the 5000 travelling fans in Rome.
Liverpool are the first Premier League club to reach the Champions League final since Roberto di Matteo's Chelsea beat Bayern Munich on penalties in 2012.
Real Madrid, by contrast, are in their third consecutive Champions League final after clinging on against Bayern Munich in another dramatic semi-final tie. Zinedine Zidane's side drew 2-2 at the Bernabéu on Tuesday night, winning 4-3 on aggregate, but would have gone out on away goals had they conceded one more to the German club.
