Diego Costa fires Atleti into Europa League final
04/05/2018
Atlético Madrid are through to the Europa League final after a single goal from Diego Costa against Arsenal on Thursday night was enough to seal the semi-final tie 2-1 on aggregate.
Despite having more possession in the first half, the Gunners were unable to get through the stalwart Atlético defence. With seven minutes left on the clock in the first half, Antoine Griezmann narrowly missed what would have been a stunning strike, and then moments before the half-time whistle, Diego Costa grabbed a breakaway opportunity, bursting forward to put Atlético 1-0 up before the break.
With Arsenal needing a goal to force extra time, the game opened up in the second half and both sides had a number of chances on goal, but the momentum swung back to the home side as the match wore on. As the Gunners waned, Diego Costa continued to look dangerous and Fernando Torres forced a save from Ospina in the closing minutes.
Atlético Madrid will meet Olympique Marseille in the final in Lyon on May 16th after the French side saw off a spirited Salzburg side, winning 3-2 on aggregate after extra time.
Atlético head coach, Diego Simeone, will not be on the touchline for the final after picking up a four-match ban from UEFA. He was sent off by referee Clement Turpin during Atleti's 1-1 semi-final first-leg draw against Arsenal last week, having continued to harangue the official in the aftermath of Sime Vrsaljko's 10th-minute red card. The Argentinian was forced to watch Thursday's 1-0 victory over the Gunners from the Metropolitano stands and that game will serve as the first of four under his suspension.
