Eurovision results auspicious for Real Madrid vs Liverpool final?
14/05/2018
LESS than two weeks ahead of the Anglo-Spanish showdown in Kiev for the UEFA Champions' League final, fans of both Real Madrid and Liverpool FC are feeling confident about their success – based upon the Eurovision Song Contest results.
Liverpool supporters have recalled that when Israel won the Eurovision in 1978, Liverpool also won the Champions – and as it was a FIFA World Cup year, the hosts, Argentina, also won.
Fast-forward 20 years, to 1998, and the famous transsexual diva Dana International once again claimed a victory for Israel in the Eurovision, just before Madrid won the Champions and the FIFA World Cup was won by its host, France.
Another 20 years on, once again a year ending in an 8, and Israel has won the Eurovision with Netta Barzilai (pictured) singing Toy – as in, 'I'm not your...', accompanied by clucking hens.
And on May 26, Real Madrid and Liverpool will thrash it out in the Ukrainian capital for the Champions title.
Given the Eurovision and Champions' League history in years ending in 8, fans of both the Spanish and the British sides are feeling good about netting the title – although one of them will, naturally, be disappointed.
And with this year's World Cup being held in Russia, it does not appear likely that the host country will carry off the trophy, given expert predictions.
Some superstitious Real Madrid supporters have even taken the fact that Spain beat the UK in the Eurovision by one place as auspicious – Amaia and Alfred's romantic ballad, Tu Canción ('Your Song') came 22nd out of 26, whilst the UK's fast-paced, catchy Storm, by SuRie, came 23rd, leading some Real fans to predict a 1-0 win against Liverpool.
Even if the World Cup link to the Eurovision in '8-years' falls down this year, whether the Eurovision and Champions' League wins in the same years are in any way connected is something fans of both will have to wait until 2038 to put to the test.
Either way, Real Madrid's manager could be a good luck charm for the UEFA Champions' League final in Kiev next Saturday: Zinedine 'Zizou' Zidane was named 'Man of the Match' after scoring two of the three goals that clinched the FIFA World Cup for France in 1998 – the last time Israel won the Eurovision.
