A CONSUMER watchdog intends to sue Facebook on behalf of the social media site's 26 million users in Spain, calling for them to be given €200 each in compensation.
The OCU says Mark Zuckerberg's empire has 'breached the national Data Protection Law' by not having asked permission from, or even informed users in Spain about its 'incorrect' data-mining.
Although the OCU says it will be up to the 'justice system' to decide the final amount of compensation for each Facebooker in Spain whose data has been used without their knowledge or consent, the organisation calculates every one of the 26 million should get at least €200 'taking into account the profits made' by the social media giant 'off the back of users' data'.
The OCU has set up an online campaign, Misdatossonmios.org ('My data is mine') so that all Facebook users in Spain can find out more about the action being taken on their behalf, and to ask for support from consumers to help them 'prevent giant corporations from continuing to use personal data without consent for their own benefits'.
