The first Spanish entry in the competition entirely in English, the catchy Say yay, with funky street-dance moves and a fast-paced dance-pop beat did not achieve the success Barei had hoped, although the general consensus was that she deserved a much better placing – Spain has been in the bottom five for many years, with the exception of 2010 when established artist Pastora Soler came 10th.
Two years on, Barei is excited about realising her dream of motherhood, but says she does not know whether she is having boys or girls.
“I don't know what they're going to be, but I don't care. I only want them to come out safely and be healthy,” she admits.
Sharing anecdotes about her pregnancy, Barei said she suddenly acquired a craving for Laughing Cow cream-cheese triangles, which she 'has not eaten in the last 20 years', but a few days later could not bear even to look at them as they made her feel ill.
And her boyfriend, the twins' father, is doting on her at the moment.
“He's very excited about becoming a dad in the next few months – he's more excited even than I am, I think,” Barei reveals.
“I think it's because men, as they're on the outside of the actual pregnancy and cannot truly know what it feels like, they worry far more than they really need to.
“He's being really attentive in everything and in every detail; he's my greatest support.”
Barei and bump – or bumps, given that, as the singer says, she now has 'three hearts beating inside her' – will continue with her scheduled tour this summer, but taking it more slowly.
Shorter concerts and less strenuous dance moves will be key in order to reduce the risks to her and the babies.
