Madrid metro drivers to strike during Pride over extra hour's work
28/06/2018
METRO drivers plan to go on strike in Madrid for 24 hours to clash with the main LGB Pride celebrations in the capital in protest over being expected to work an extra hour on that day.
Although International Gay Pride Day is today (Thursday, June 28), most festivals and marches will be held either this coming Saturday or next – July 7 – which is when it is due to take over Madrid.
Given the huge popularity of this colourful, musical parade and fair, the underground train lines ran 24 hours on the date last year.
This year, the service was only due to be prolonged for an extra hour, with the last train leaving at 02.33 the Sunday morning rather than the usual 01.33 and stations shutting at 03.00 rather than 02.00.
Metro drivers complain the public-sector transport company which employs them has 'not negotiated' what compensation or overtime pay they will get as a result.
The firm has said it will pay each driver working the additional hour €50 on top of their usual salary, which they will receive in their August wage packet, plus an hour off in lieu.
But the drivers want €75 and a full eight-hour day off in lieu.
