TV dilemma: Spain-Russia match clashes with F1 Austria Grand Prix
29/06/2018
SPORTS fans will face a huge TV dilemma on Sunday – the Spain v Russia World Cup match, the first in the second round, is set to clash with the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix.
Whilst the French Grand Prix was rescheduled to avoid the World Cup, the tight Formula 1 schedule means this has not been possible with the race in Austria.
Kick-off between Spain and Russia at the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium in Moscow is at 16.00 mainland Spain time, whilst the Grand Prix in Spielberg starts at 15.10, meaning for at least an hour, they will coincide, as the latter will normally run for an hour and 40 minutes.
Although this is set to be a problem for sports lovers worldwide – except those who do not mind seeing either the match or the race after the event on a catch-up programme – it looks likely that in Spain, the World Cup will win the toss-up: the Russia-Spain match will be broadcast live on Telecinco, the country's fifth 'terrestrial' channel and for free, whilst the Grand Prix will be shown on Movístar F1, a pay-per-view channel.
And ratings are sky-high for World Cup matches – over 11 million viewers watched the Spain-Morocco match, way higher than the number who tuned in for the Champions' League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool FC.
