OLYMPIC gold medal-winning swimmer Mireia Belmonte has been forced to scratch from the European Championships due to 'vertigo'.
The star sportswoman from Badalona (Barcelona province) has revealed on her Twitter account that following a series of medical checks – all of which were otherwise satisfactory – her doctors have recommended she does not exert herself this summer.
That means the European Championships between August 3 and 12 in Glasgow, Scotland will be off the cards.
The current 200-metres butterfly Olympic champion says she will be putting all her energies into preparing for the World Championships in 2019 in South Korea instead, and has wished the Spanish team lots of luck in Glasgow.
She tweeted: “The vertigos of the last few months prevent me from competing with full guarantees at the European Championships.”
