Antonio Banderas to open 'pioneering' theatre in Málaga
21/07/2018
ACTOR Antonio Banderas plans to open a museum next September in his native city, Málaga.
Partly funded by Caixabank and promoted by the Hollywood legend, the future Soho Theatre is expected to open in time for Banderas' Broadway production Zorba the Greek.
This will be shown on screen in Málaga with subtitles in Spanish, then a Spanish theatre company will reproduce it in their own language.
Banderas has reached a deal with Broadway to repeat the process with ballet, opera and other shows at the Soho Theatre in what he calls 'a first for Spain'.
Courses and seminars will also be held there, as well as plenty of productions by Spain's most famous playwrights across the centuries, including Lope de Vega and Pedro Calderón de la Barca from the 17th century and Antonio Buero Vallejo and Federico García Lorca from the 20th century.
The former husband of actress Melanie Griffith and stepfather of Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson has visited the currently under-construction theatre and helped workmen mount the boards.
Once open, it will have seating for 700 spectators in the main hall and for 200 in a smaller auditorium for 'arthouse' productions.
