Helicopters and increased security appeared to confirm this on Friday evening, and spectators were not disappointed – fans in the front row chanted, “Pedro, Pedro!” and the president smiled and waved from his box by the side of the stage.
The last time Pedro and Begoña went to Benicàssim International Festival was in 2016, also to see The Killers – the Las Vegas-based pop-rockers headed up by Brandon Flowers who shot to fame worldwide with their 2009 hit Human.
Popular with high-ranking Spanish leaders, The Killers is also one of Queen Letizia's favourite bands – she went along to FIB in 2013 to see them live, but managed to evade the cameras.
