Barcelona taxi drivers on two-day strike
24/07/2018
TAXI drivers in Barcelona will be on strike tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday – the same days as Ryanair cabin crew, although the industrial action has not been designed to coincide with that of the airline.
Still, anyone planning on flying to the Catalunya capital over the next few days should be aware of possible travel connection headaches and use the metro instead if possible.
Six different taxi associations, including those representing Latin American and Pakistani drivers in the metropolitan area, have announced strikes in order to campaign for Über and Cabify-type schemes to require a council licence.
Cab drivers have long been protesting against car-hire-with-a-driver set-ups being able to freely 'intrude' on their patch and undercut them on price.
Barcelona city council agreed to set up a fair and equal licensing scheme, but this was overruled by the regional High Court of Justice.
Taxi drivers will now strike in support of their local authority's decision and in protest over the High Court's ruling.
