McLaren signs up Carlos Sainz to replace Alonso
19/08/2018
FORMULA 1 whizz Fernando Alonso's place on team McLaren will be taken by another Spaniard from the start of the 2019 season – Madrid-born Carlos Sainz Junior is reported to be joining the British scuderia next year.
Sainz, who has followed his father into motorsport, was set to be left teamless next season after losing his existing Rénault place to Australia's Daniel Ricciardo, who will be competing alongside Nico Hulkenberg.
Twice-world champion Alonso's recent announcement that he was leaving Formula 1 has created a vacancy for his compatriot.
Sainz, who raced with Toro Rosso for three seasons from his Formula 1 début in 2015 has so far raced in 72 Grands Prix, and his best result to date has been a fourth place in Singapore in 2017.
McLaren's managing director Zak Brown says Sainz 'will provide the perfect combination of youth and experience' to the team.
“Even though he's only 23 years old, he's about to embark on his fifth season in Formula 1 and will bring lots of experience he has acquired at this level and with our colleagues, Rénault,” Brown announced when revealing the name of Alonso's replacement.
Paddock gossip hints at Esteban Ocon or Stoffel Vandoorne as being Carlos Sainz's possible team-mate, but if McLaren is unable to reach a deal with either, they are rumoured to be considering signing up Lando Norris – a young prodigy who competed in the Formula 2 championship this year and was Alonso's colleague in Daytona.
Carlos tweeted this week: “Very happy and proud to be able to announce that I will be driving with McLaren next season. Racing with such a legendary and special F1 team is a dream come true!”
