A FAMOUS cupcake shop that became a Mecca for the girls on Sex and the City is shifting across the pond to Madrid.
Magnolia Bakery, heavily frequented by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character Carrie Bradshaw and her friends, soared in popularity in New York after it was featured on the series that ended 15 years ago, and for the first time is about to launch a pop-up version in Europe.
Decked out just like the original in Manhattan and serving the same chocolate cakes, banana pudding and cupcakes, Magnolia Bakery will be brought to the Spanish capital by Seagram’s NY Hotel on March 21.
Based in Madrid’s Hotel Inglés, it will be serving members of the public and fans of the show until April 14.
Seagram’s NY Hotel’s pop-up in Madrid will also be dishing up the fashionable ‘Death & Co’ cocktails, the fun ‘Bingo Brunch’, and hosting The New York Show in a full Big Apple-style festival for nearly a month.
Spain is the obvious choice for a European outpost of Sex and the City, given that it is the home of Carrie’s beloved Manolo Blahniks.
These iconic, top-of-the-range shoes, which Carrie famously pleaded with a robber to spare her, are the creation of Canary Island footwear designer of the same name – although Blahnik himself has only ever opened three eponymous stores in the country, one each in Madrid and Barcelona and one in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, meaning they are in fact far easier to find in New York than in their home nation.
