Mercadona seeks 200 staff for IT department
17/04/2019
MERCADONA supermarkets are seeking 200 new members of staff for its IT department in its latest major recruitment drive.
Candidates can be either graduates or with an FP (Formación Profesional) at Grado Superior level - which is about the equivalent of a BTEC Higher National Diploma or a foundation degree - in IT and Network Systems Management, Web Applications Development, or Multi-Platform Applications Development.
However, it is likely the firm will consider other experience or qualifications suitable for the roles offered, including qualifications studied for outside of Spain.
Senior positions advertised require 'extensive experience' as well as relevant qualifications.
Mercadona's IT department, in Paterna (Valencia province), is made up of 500 employees, and the firm wants to increase this number to 700.
Existing staff are multi-disciplinary professionals specialising in software engineering - front-end, back-end, cloud, and site reliability - project managers, business architecture, systems administrators, operations, analysis, IoT (Internet of Things), and web security.
Expanding the team is part of Mercadona's recently-announced 'digital transformation' involving improving its online tools and processes and setting up joint schemes with specialist IT solutions providers, and maximising efficiency in processes and decision-making via unique and accurate data.
The company plans to invest €150 million a year in this 'digital transformation'.
New IT staff in Paterna will be placed on a permanent job contract from day one - which is unheard of in Spain, where up to the first year can be a series of temporary contracts - plus tailored training plans and the option, medium-term, of applying for promotion.
Mercadona's in-house promotion scheme saw 860 of its 85,000-strong employee team move into more senior positions in 2018.
