AFTER five days of intense heat with temperatures above 40ºC in the shade in much of Spain, the mercury is set to drop today (Saturday) and tomorrow and persistent heavy rain is forecast.
According to the State meteorological agency, AEMET, the northern third of the mainland will see a fairly drastic fall in temperatures and rain throughout both days, which could be heavy in specific pockets.
Around 1.5 to two centimetres of rain (0.6 to 0.8 inches) within an hour is expected in spells throughout the weekend along the northern coastal strip, the Pyrénées and Catalunya, and this could extend to the upper Ebro area and the north of Castilla y León.
In many parts of the country north of Madrid, thermometers may not even climb above 20ºC all day.
Elsewhere in the country, a slight drop in temperatures and cloudy skies, but otherwise dry weather, is expected this weekend.
The exception will be the Mediterranean, which is typically sweltering with temperatures in the 30s from mid-June to mid-September, but which has largely escaped the extremes of the heatwaves – this weekend, no rain is forecast in the regions of the Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia and eastern Andalucía, and temperatures will sit at around 35ºC during the hottest part of the day.
The mercury will fall slightly by the end of Sunday and early Monday in the coastal provinces from Castellón to Almería and in the Balearic Islands, but the whole country – except the Atlantic coasts - will see it gradually rise from Monday until around Thursday.
Starting Monday, conditions are forecast to become more stable and in keeping with the season until further notice, with no heatwaves or episodes of falling temperatures and persistent rain for a while.
