Carolina Marín scratches from badminton world championship due to injury
05/08/2019
BADMINTON ace Carolina Marín has announced she will not be taking part in the forthcoming world championships, due to take place in Basel, Switzerland on August 19.
The 26-year-old from Huelva has not fully recovered from a damaged ligament in her right knee, sustained in January during the final of the Indonesia Masters.
She had been working hard at a training centre in the Sierra Nevada for two weeks, but after this, she and her team said they did not think 'the circumstances were right' for her to compete in the world championships, which she has already won three times – in 2014, 2015 and 2018.
“Despite the fact that the feeling during the [Sierra Nevada training] process was optimum, the circumstances are not yet right to compete at the level required, either physically or in competitive terms,” Carolina's team said yesterday (Sunday) in a press conference.
“Although there is still no certainty in this respect, it is estimated that [Carolina's] recovery times will be completed by September and that she will be able to make her reappearance at the Vietnam Open.”
As at mid-July, Carolina had already said she was not sure whether she would be ready in time to defend her world title, but that her main aim is to go all out for another gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, repeating her performance at Rio 2016.
In addition to her Olympic gold and three world championships, Carolina – widely considered to be one of the best female badminton players in history – has won four European championships, first in 2014 and then three on the trot including last year's.
