TWO of Spain's largest high-street banks are reported to be in merger talks, potentially resulting in the joint entity being the second-biggest in the country in terms of share capital.
Tax office writes off all debts of €3 or less
13/08/2019
SPAIN'S tax authorities have wiped out all debts owing by individuals and companies for €3 or less, according to a communication released today (Tuesday).
Hacienda, as the national revenue office is known, says an amendment has been made to a Ministerial Order dating back to 2002 and that those who were owing as at March 1 this year would be removed from the debtors' list.
This move is 'strictly financial', Hacienda explains, since unpaid tax totalling €3 or less would cost more to chase up and collect than the amount owing.
Even taking into account that the collective amount of debts held nationally that do not exceed €3 may total hundreds of thousands, each and every one of them would require a letter, text message or email, or even a notification in the State Official Bulletin (BOE) where payment reminders have failed, plus the employee time required in issuing these, meaning the total admin and labour cost would surpass the collective sum missing.
Tax authorities say it is 'not worth it' as they would 'get nothing out of' continuing to chase these cases.
