IF YOU'RE in the Comunidad Valenciana any time between now and the early hours of March 20, you may notice an awful lot of noise and colour on the streets. It's the season for the region's biggest festival,...
Where did Spanish celebrities spend their summer holidays?
07/09/2019
THEY'RE rich, famous and lead the high life when they're off duty from their punishing, time-consuming schedules and manage to escape the limelight for a couple of weeks. So you'd expect they'd head for the most exotic – and private - locations on earth: the Seychelles, the Maldives, the Caribbean...
But no – although many opted for Asia or other destinations in Europe, some Spanish celebrities took a staycation. Household names with the budget to go anywhere on the planet chose parts of the country where you may have been or might even live, or which could well be on your Spain holiday wish list and can be visited for very little money.
And if they're good enough for the stars of the big and small screen, they're certainly good enough for us.
Paula Echevarría and Miguel Torres
Paula, 42, who has starred regularly in TV films and serials – mostly thrillers and crime dramas – and her retired footballer partner Miguel Torres Gómez, 33, who has played for Real Madrid, Getafe, Olimpiacos and Málaga, took a trip to the Amalfi coast in south-western Italy, but then visited the village of Candás, part of the wider Carreño area of the northern region of Asturias, where Paula comes from (first photograph, left).
Not content with two holidays, the couple, who have been together for a year, headed to Marbella in mid-August – one of their regular, and usually annual, summer destinations – from which Paula Instagrammed a photo of herself on the beach (first picture, right).
Blanca Suárez and Mario Casas
Actress and model Blanca, 29, has been in some of Spain's top drama serials – El Internado, El Barco, and the period show about the first-ever female call-centre operators in Spain, Las Chicas del Cable, as well as working with film directors of the magnitude of Pedro Almodóvar. Mario Casas, 33, who starred in Antonio Banderas' El Camino de los Ingleses ('The Way of the English') and the film adaptation in Spanish of Federico Moccia's coming-of-age novel Tre Metri Sopra il Cielo, has been going out with Blanca for just over a year, so their summer break was only their second trip together. Although they did not stay in Spain, they chose to remain on the Mediterranean, where warm weather, warm seas and stunning beaches are guaranteed in July and August. Their tour of Greece included the famous archaeological sites in Athens, such as the Acropolis, where Mario said it was 'very hot'.
Cristina Pedroche and David Muñoz
Presenter Cristina, 30, who appears on Atresmedia for the New Year chimes in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square and who has headed up popular shows on different channels – including, for several years, Zapeando – and also on the DJ team on Spain's chart radio show, Los 40 Principales – travelled to Thailand and Hong Kong with her husband of four years, celebrity chef David Muñoz, 39, whose Madrid restaurant DiverXo recently earned its third Michelin star.
Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth
We've already shown you snaps of Spanish-Romanian actress and model Elsa celebrating her 43rd birthday with Australian actor husband Chris on an Ibiza yacht accompanied by Matt Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso, and the couple also joined together a large group of friends for a party on one of the island's beaches (second picture). Given that their fortune effectively allows them to spend their entire lives on holiday, they have been travelling most of the summer – to Paris, and also to the Basque beach city of San Sebastián, famous for its warmth in July and August but with less humidity than further south, and for its stunning shell-shaped beach, La Concha.
But their trips to Spain and France involved a long-haul flight – they currently live in Hemsworth's native country, although in Byron Bay, New South Wales, rather than Melbourne, Victoria, where the 36-year-old was born.
Pablo Motos
Comedian and presenter Pablo, who heads up the crazy celebrity chat show El Hormiguero – which literally translates as 'the ant's nest' – showed in his Instagram pictures that even factor 50 can be too low for a pale-skinned redhead. Although his sunburn did not stop him enjoying a fun summer break in Jávea, in the northern half of the province of Alicante.
Pablo spent most of his time practising paddle-surf, and scuba-diving; and certainly for the latter, he could not have picked a better location. Various diving centres, which offer courses ranging from complete beginners to those training for instructor level, take individuals or groups out to stunning seascapes such as the Cabo de la Nao – mainland Spain's second-most easterly point – where the underwater spectacle is simply breathtaking.
Lara Álvarez
The ex-fiancée of Formula 1 ace Fernando Alonso ought to have had her fill of far-flung travel this year, given that the 33-year-old from Gijón (Asturias) presenter spent three months in Hondurás, giving the commentary on the harsh jungle reality show Supervivientes (Spain's answer to Survivors). But on and off duty, the former MotoGP and Marca Gol football presenter has managed to cram four continents into less than nine months: this summer, she toured Vietnam and its neighbour Cambodia, including the obligatory tour of the Angkor Wat complex in Siem Reap, and also Marrakech, Morocco, where she was photographed strolling round the back lanes and the massive souk off the city's huge Djemaa El-Fnâ square.
Aida Domènech ('Dulceida') and Alba Paul Ferrer
Fashion blogger and influencer Aida, 29 – better known as Dulceida – who has over 2.5 million followers on Instagram alone, and her wife of three years, Alba Paul Ferrer, decided to stay in Spain for their summer break.
Their first trip was to Barcelona for the Girlie Circuit Festival – Europe's biggest and most famous international lesbian music, sports and leisure events, which runs for 10 days and concluded this year on August 18 (the Circuit Festival is the men's version) – before heading north to the Costa Brava for some sunshine and relaxation on the beach.
Jorge Javier Vázquez and Mila Jiménez
Award-winning presenter of Celebrity Big Brother, Survivors, Spain's Got Talent and other popular reality shows, Jorge Javier, 49, joined his friend and long-time colleague Mila Ximénez, 67, on a trip to London early this summer. More recently, Jorge Javier took a Mediterranean break on his own, to Porto Cervo on the Italian island of Sardinia.
Belén Esteban
One of the most-seen faces on Spanish TV, prolific presenter of gossip-style chat shows Belén, and her husband Miguel Marcos Martín, spent their holidays in Tuscany, and of course, had to get their obligatory snapshots showing them holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But on their return, they spent a few days pottering around different locations in Galicia in Spain's far north-west, a popular haunt for those who want to enjoy warm summer weather but without the extremes of heat and humidity that the southern and Mediterranean coasts and islands can sometimes bring.
Risto Mejide and Laura Escanes
Judge on Spain's X-Factor and Got Talent, among other top entertainment-based reality shows, 44-year-old Risto and his influencer wife Laura Escanes, 23, are expecting a baby any time soon, but decided to take advantage of their last pre-parental weeks of freedom by chilling out in the crystalline waters of the Balearic island of Menorca.
