TEEN climate change activist Greta Thunberg has inspired a children's opera due to be performed in Granollers (Barcelona province).
It is the year 3333, and the earth's inhabitants all descend from only three human beings who survived the climate apocalypse.
Known as 'tri-humans', they have to work together to make decisions to preserve what is left of their planet.
But instead of shouting at each other and lying the way their ancestors did, the fourth-millennium 'tri-humans' communicate by singing – so it's not as dark and gloomy as it first appears to be.
They find an ancient artefact – a mobile phone which belonged to the founder of the Fridays For Future movement, Greta Thunberg – and, through it, discover over 1,000 years of history: the major disaster that all but wiped out their species and transformed the earth, and also about how humans in the previous millennium lived, ate, consumed, and worked.
The script and libretta are penned by well-known playwright Piti Español, and composer Joan Vives – who has worked with the Dagoll Dagom Theatre Company on numerous occasions – created the music.
Shown at the Auditorium-Theatre in Granollers from March 28 to 29 inclusive, the opera Greta i els Trihumans ('Greta and the Trihumans') is part of an annual project in which the Granollers Chamber Orchestra, the theatre's children's choir, and the Granollers Cultural Association work together to produce an opera for kids.
The play is an hour long, and naturally, carries an important message: that of making sure we look after our planet while we still have one.
