Día supermarkets pays staff €250 extra for 'dedication' during quarantine period
27/03/2020
WHILE many employees in Spain at present are worrying about their wages being cut along with their hours due to the national lockdown, high-street supermarket chain Día has given its staff a substantial pay rise.
All its workers in stores, warehouses and franchises, and support staff including logistics, packaging and office-based employees, will get a bonus of €250 a month before tax for as long as the quarantine period lasts.
The company says this will cost a total of €9 million, but considers it justly deserved, since supermarket staff still have to go to work – even if this means risking infection – in order to provide a basic and essential service to the public.
A 'reward for their dedication' in staying on the job during the Coronavirus outbreak, the extra €250 a month will be given to franchise workers and payroll staff at main Día stores and at Día Market, Día & Go, Día Maxi, the website Dia.es, La Plaza de Día, and Clarel.
The firm currently employs 24,000 people, and a further 2,000 of its franchises employ 6,800 in addition.
They are largely based at the 4,236 stores and 14 warehouses nationwide.
“We've been working very intensively these last few weeks, and the company has witnessed extraordinary dedication by our people,” says CEO Ricardo Álvarez.
“The firm has a very conscientious team which has been giving the best of itself with a clear mission: That of serving the population in these very difficult circumstances.”
