Mercadona pay scales have store staff on just over €1,400 a month by the time they have worked with the company for around three years, and the corporation includes other benefits such as extending maternity and paternity leave on full pay.
Except when this would mean two or more days on the trot being closed to the public, Mercadona is always closed on bank holidays, and company policy has been, to date, never to trade on a Sunday.
Full-time staff now work a five-day week, rather than, as many did previously, six-hour daily shifts over six days.
Over 90% of the company's staff is on a permanent job contract, although at busy times, a certain number of temporary jobs are offered to cover the increase in demand.
The firm founded in the province of Valencia by Spain's third-richest man, Juan Roig – and which started out as a small, family-run food shop – has new jobs up for grabs in the provinces of León, A Coruña and Pontevedra (Galicia), Cáceres (Extremadura), Valencia, and the northern region of Cantabria.
Most are for store staff, but Mercadona is also seeking a delivery worker, an IT technician and a social media specialist.
Shop-floor staff are needed to fill temporary posts in Coria (Cáceres), Santander (Cantabria), Calvià and Cala Ratjada (Mallorca), Vigo (Pontevedra), La Bañeza, Ponferrada and Astorga (León), on a gross monthly salary of €1,338, although depending upon demand, some of these posts could become permanent.
The ideal candidates will 'have some knowledge of the different functions, products and positions so that contact with the customer will be the most appropriate', and will be involved in remerchandising displays, storage, labelling, and receiving goods, as well as customer service.
A delivery driver with at least a year's experience and a driving licence, available for work between Monday and Saturday, is sought in Rianxo (A Coruña) on the same wage and a temporary contract.
The Valencia jobs are based in the town of Paterna and are permanent – the social media specialist will start on €1,338 a month gross pay but with wages rising progressively, whilst the IT and video-conference technician will start on an annual gross salary of €22,904 (approximately €1,538 per month after tax) rising to €34,770 (about €2,190 a month).
Two in-store positions on temporary contracts are advertised in Vigo – one of them full-time at the starting gross pay of €1,338 a month, and the other part-time, 26-and-a-half hours a week for a gross monthly pay of €887 (around €820 a month net).
