03/01/2021
Agriculture, logistics and the manufacturing industry are the sectors most likely to create employment in Spain in 2021, according to a report by human resource consulting firm Randstad. In their November report, these three sectors alone accounted for 617,000 new contracts, more than 44% of the total number of new contracts signed across the country.
Activities relating to new technology, like e-commerce, IT security, teleworking solutions, online training or streaming content production are also projected to create considerable numbers of new jobs over the coming year.
In their report, Randstad estimates that agriculture and livestock farming would continue to be most dynamic sectors in terms of generating employment, after generating 314,790 new contracts in November - 25.2% more than in the same month in 2019 and the biggest year on year increase of any of the sectors.
Andalusia saw the biggest upturn in recruitment in the agriculture sector (+38.8%), followed by the Balearic Islands (+23,8%) and Murcia (+21.8%). Andalusia was also responsible for the highest volume of new contracts (185,833), followed by Murcia (42,915) and the Valencian Community (34,327).
According to Randstad, consumer lockdown habits, with the focus on e-commerce, have made the logistics sector one of the most dynamic in terms of job creation. This trend is expected to continue well into 2021, after 133,637 new contracts were signed in the sector in November - 22.3% more than in November 2019. The biggest increases compared with last year, and way above the national average, were to be found in Castilla-La Mancha (+69%) and La Rioja (+64,9%), and the regions that saw the largest number of new contracts signed were Andalusia (22,729), Catalonia (21,211) and Madrid (18,650).
In the case of the manufacturing industry, the Randstad report underlined the gains made in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and food sectors, which are also expected to continue generating employment during 2021. In fact, the manufacturing sector which encompasses these three activities registered 168,477 contracts in November, 6.1% up on the previous year.
Region by region, the manufacturing industry sector saw its greatest gains in Castilla-La Mancha (+23%), Cantabria (+22,2%) and Aragon (+19,9%) and the highest number of contracts in Catalonia (28,925), the Valencian Community (23,171) and Andalusia (18,655).
