Latest job vacancies: From Día supermarkets to Málaga's 'Silicon Valley'

Latest job vacancies: From Día supermarkets to Málaga's 'Silicon Valley'

ThinkSPAIN Team 13/06/2021

DÍA supermarkets are looking for temporary staff to cover increased summer demand, offering six-month contracts with a starting pay of approximately €1,200 a month net of taxes.

A total of 47 vacancies have arisen in stores and warehouses, and include check-out staff, general shop assistants and shelf-stackers, although a handful of opportunities for qualified professionals on offer include admin employees, sales managers and quality technicians.

Not many are based on the coasts, though – the jobs are in the main towns and cities in the provinces of Barcelona, Madrid, Cáceres, Soria and Navarra.

For shop and warehouse workers, the only qualifications needed are compulsory education – the ESO, Spain's answer to GCSEs, or the equivalent.

Personal attributes include being dynamic, proactive and with excellent customer service and team-working skills.

In general, staff will work 22 hours a week, but this varies according to location and position.

Other major retailers which have been recruiting in the past few months, and may need extra temporary or permanent workers in the future, include Amazon, Ikea and Mercadona.

Amazon's starting pay for a full-time job is around €1,400 a month, and Mercadona's is just under €1,200 take-home, rising to nearly €1,500 a month after tax following three years' service.

Málaga jobs in technology expected to grow

For those based on the south coast and seeking work of a more high-tech and qualified nature, the so-called 'Málaga Valley', or 'Costa del Silicon', has recently launched and around 200 global companies are said to be in the process of opening hubs there, planning to do so, or have already done so.

Vodafone has promised its new research and development centre in Málaga will create around 600 jobs, and at the moment, around 10 have been advertised for technical specialists, cyber-security experts, software engineers and developers, which generally require extensive experience and fluency in English – most are full-time, permanent positions.

Google's cyber-security centre is not due to open in Málaga until 2023, but the company is already offering a handful of jobs for the city, for in-house researchers and software engineers, with extensive technical knowledge and fluency in English.

Electronics engineers are sought by Japanese corporation TDK, which is offering flexible hours, permanent positions, the option of working from home, and salaries that could reach up to €300,000 a year before tax depending upon expertise.

IBM is seeking a range of specialists, including software engineers, Big Data analysts, consultants and Cloud experts with several years' experience, a wide-ranging knowledge of their field, and good communication skills, well-organised, and 'resilient'.

Other companies not directly technology-based with vacancies in 'Málaga Valley' include Freepik, Deloitte, Endesa and Accenture.
