Multiple Grammy-winner Alejandro Sanz to get Hollywood Walk of Fame star
25/09/2021
POP legend Alejandro Sanz will have a star in his name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, three decades after his catchy lyrics and ballads began hogging the charts in Spain and then going global.
The singer and The Voice judge will get to see this landmark honour when it is unveiled on October 1 at number 1750 Vine Street, just outside the Capitol Records building, and which will be streamed live on Walkoffame.com.
Still churning out hits in 2021, exactly 30 years after his début album Viviendo Deprisa ('Living in the Fast Lane'), the artist behind the iconic 1998 hit Corazón Partío ('Broken Heart') is every bit as famous in the USA as he is in Spain and Latin America, having gone platinum on the entire continent with all 18 of his studio compilations.
His most recent album, #ElDisco, was released in 2019, but Sanz is reported to be working on another at present.
The USA has one of the world's largest mother-tongue Spanish-speaking populations – in excess of 50 million, or more than the entire headcount of Spain itself – and the sound of the language and its music is part of the furniture in the North American country, so it comes as no surprise that a pop legend who sings entirely in Spanish would be so well-known there.
In fact, he holds four Grammy Awards, more than any other Spanish artist, and 25 Latin Grammys, as well as being named Person of the Year in 2017 by the Latin Recording Academy in recognition of his star-studded career and major charitable contributions.
After Los Angeles' Chamber of Commerce confirmed Sanz's name for the latest star, Walk of Fame producer Ana Martínez said: “Alejandro Sanz is one of the most talented singers, with millions of fans all over the world who will be delighted to see the star in person when they visit their favourite Hollywood artist.”
Sanz is due to start his US tour, #LAGIRA (literally, 'The Tour'), where he will be on stage in 12 different towns and cities, having recently represented Europe at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics opening ceremony with his own version of John Lennon's and Yoko Ono's Imagine.
Non-Spanish-speaking fans may know of Alejandro Sanz through his duets with Colombian pop-rock legend Shakira – La Tortura ('The Torture'), and Te lo Agradezco Pero No ('Thanks But No') – although the list of international stars he has worked with as featured artist on their tracks is huge.
Tony Bennett, Nicky Jam, Marc Anthony, The Corrs, Camila Cabello, Destiny's Child and Alicia Keys are just a handful.
Others include Laura Pausini, Ivete Sangalo, Emeli Sandé, Juanés, Juan Luis Guerra, Alejandro Fernández, Joaquín Sabina, Joan Manuel Serrat, Pablo Alborán, Niña Pastori, and Judit Neddermann.
