Sara Carbonero 'operated on urgently', but best friend says: “Don't panic”
25/11/2022
RADIO DJ and fashion designer Sara Carbonero's best friend has send out reassuring messages after the celebrity mum of two was admitted to hospital for an emergency operation on Monday, although full details of her surgery have not yet been released.
Ex-wife of Spanish football team captain Iker Casillas – one-time goalkeeper for Real Madrid – Sara, 38, attended a 'routine' check-up at Madrid's Clínica Universitaria de Navarra hospital on Monday, and medics decided to operate on her 'urgently'.
Fans have been greatly concerned, given that exactly the same happened in May 2019, when she was diagnosed with early-stage ovarian cancer.
The radio presenter was accompanied at all times during the day by her mother, Goyi Arévalo, who had travelled over from Sara's home town in the province of Toledo, her best friend Isabel Jiménez and her sister Irene Carbonero.
Irene is said to be looking after Sara's two children while their mother is in hospital.
Sara's new boyfriend of eight months, musician Nacho Taboada, 35, spent the night in her hospital room on Monday, and the four are said to be taking it in shifts to ensure she is accompanied at all times.
A mixed message came from the popular airtime figure on her Instagram account, where she is a prolific poster – a video of the latest song by one of her favourite artists Valeria Castro, a personal friend, captioned with part of the lyrics.
These read: “Yo me conformo con poquito, que tanto no necesito...Contener las ganas de volver a vivir hoy...No es fácil, pero no se puede hacer como que no es importante.” [“I'll settle for just a little, I don't need that much...holding back my eagerness to get back to living for today...it's not easy, but I can't pretend it's not important.”]
Isabel, however, was feeling relaxed enough about the situation to attend a brand-launch party in Madrid for Aquazzura, and when asked by concerned reporters, smiled and told them 'everything was fine'.
Without giving away any details Sara would have wanted to remain private, Isabel said: “Don't worry, because she's fine, she's very well. Don't panic!”
Ex-husband Iker is still in Qatar, at the World Cup, although as he explained on chat show El Programa de Ana Rosa, he had been willing to drop everything and return to Madrid to care for his and Sara's two boys.
Presenting the tournament on RTVE, Iker, 41, explained he and Sara 'talked it through' and decided he should remain in Qatar in order to 'maintain normality', both in public and for the benefit of the children.
Cancer survivor
Just a week after her then husband Iker collapsed with a heart attack during training, needing an emergency stent operation, Sara revealed she would have to undergo surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Doctors were talking of a complete cure, and she finished all treatment just before lockdown 2020.
The couple had been living in Oporto, Portugal, for the past five years, as Iker was playing for FC Porto, but his enforced retirement caused by his heart attack two days after his 38th birthday meant they took the decision to move back to the family home in Pozuelo de Alarcón, on the outskirts of Spain's capital.
Until her cancer diagnosis, Sara had been a regular face on Spanish television, working as sports reporter for the national broadcasting company RTVE, although she took a year off after the move to Portugal to care for the couple's sons, Martín and Lucas.
She continued to work behind the scenes and to promote the sustainable fashion brand, SlowLove, which she runs alongside her oldest friend and fellow presenter Isabel Jiménez.
Sara modelled her and Isabel's creations on social media, wearing a wig during chemotherapy that looked exactly like her trademark long, dark and wavy locks, which have now fully grown back.
Since the family's return to Madrid, Sara went 'back to her roots' and rejoined the team at Radio Marca, linked to the sports newspaper Marca, where she hosts a programme titled Que Siga el Baile ('Let the Dance Go On'), interviewing a cross-section of celebrities.
Iker and Sara separated in early 2021, although remain friends and bring up their sons, aged eight and six, together.
