Three drown on beaches in Alicante Province in one day
26/09/2003
Three men drowned last Sunday in the sea off beaches in the province of Alicante.
The first tragedy happened at around 11.00 hrs in Santa Pola when several bathers spotted a man floating in the sea and immediately phoned the 112 emergency line. The 65-year-old man later died in hospital.
At around 12.10 hrs, the emergency line received another call about a 71-year-old man at La Mata beach in Torrevieja, who also died.
The third drowning happened just after 14.00 hrs at the Playa Urbanova in Alicante. Swimmers thought they had succeeded in rescuing a 55-year-old man, but the emergency services were unable to revive him.
Although that particular beach has had no rescue services or look-out posts since September 15, most beaches in the province had red flags on Sunday due to high winds.
