Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Sierra Nevada threatened by climate change
28/06/2004
High temperatures derived from climatic change are threatening vegetation on Sierra Nevada, in particular its endemic flora, according to the yearly Environment report published by the Junta de Andalucía.
Provincial Environment delegate Gerardo Sánchez has declared that although climatic change is gradual and its effects will not be felt until hundreds of years’ time, the fact those variations are taking place “in short intervals of time” in Sierra Nevada, the greatest biodiversity reserve in Europe with over 2.100 different plant species, is worrying. This situation mainly affects plants located in the highest parts of Sierra Nevada, where caterpillar plagues have also been detected for the first time.
The latest Environment report, however, also includes positive information on Granada’s main problem: forest fires, which “only affected 426 hectares” in the province, a significant drop from previous years.
