A mobile Red Cross unit in Granada is slowly gaining the confidence of prostitutes and their customers by providing them with free condoms. So far this year, four former prostitutes have decided to stop what they are doing and enroll in training and employment courses. Two others are thinking it over.
According to Welfare councillor Ana López Andújar, during the last six months the mobile unit has attended 40 prostitutes, 13 transsexuals and 15 others including customers, passers-by and friends. "Since the scheme started three years ago, the team has won the prostitutes´ confidence," she said, especially when it comes to supplying free condoms.
Given the success of the initiative, the councillor was pleased to announce an extension of the service to Wednesday to Friday nights from 10pm-4am.
