It has been one of the most tragic weekends of the year so far on Spanish roads. Between 3pm on Friday and midnight last night, 41 people were killed in 26 fatal accidents, the third highest weekend death toll of the year, after the second weekend in July when 43 people died, and the first weekend in August when 48 people lost their lives. A further 49 people were injured, 24 of whom seriously, according to General Traffic Department (DGT) figures.
The most serious accident of the weekend occurred in the town of La Almolda, when five members of the same family were killed after a collision with a lorry. Four people were killed and six others injured yesterday in an incident involving three cars and a lorry (photo) on the N-630 near the town of Pizarral (Salamanca). Among those killed were two children and a Guardia Civil officer.
Two youngsters, aged 19 and 20, were killed on the A-357 near Casarabonela (Málaga) yesterday morning in a head on collision. The two youths were travelling with three others, who were all seriously injured. The driver of the second car suffered only minor injuries. Four other youngsters, aged between 16 and 21, died on the GRSO-33 country road near Las Gabias (Granada), when the driver of their vehicle lost control and smashed into a concrete wall at the side of the road.
