It has always been common practice among painters to reuse old canvases. They paint new works over older ones, often their own, perhaps from their early years or projects they considered unsuccessful, and sometimes over other artists’ canvases. The fact is that, over the years, genuine works of art have been discovered hidden beneath later ones.

Something similar happens with “historic” houses. We often see old homes covered over with plasterboard and floating floors, turning them into blank canvases produced in series, ready to be repainted, decorated and inhabited, but with all their essence disappearing. Then there are renovations like the “Ecce Homo of Borja”, carried out with good intentions and little expertise. The worst thing about these is that they are beyond recovery and, moreover, let’s not deny it, they are ugly—very ugly.

And then there are houses that, if they were painters, would use only the technique of glazing: the one that is semi-transparent and leaves what was painted before visible. They look carefully, preserve what is good, restore what is best and, from there, update and renew.

History of the basilica
The Catholic Monarchs founded the Royal Convent of Santo Domingo in 1492. The church was built in the second quarter of the 16th century, during a period of transition between late Gothic and the Renaissance. At the beginning of the 18th century, the convent was renovated, including the construction of the cloister, completed in 1728, and, years later, the sacristy, completed in 1764. Following approval by Pope Pius VII on August 22, 1806, the City Council and the Cathedral Chapter confirmed that the Virgen del Mar would become the patron saint of the city.
