Description
The Castillo del Cardenal, with its annexes and land of 42.475m2 in Corcubión.
El Castillo del Cardenal is an 18th-century fortress located in Corcubión (A Coruña), in the heart of the Costa da Morte, overlooking the entrance to the estuary and facing the Atlantic Ocean, one of the most emblematic and best preserved landscapes of the European coast.
El Castillo del Cardenal considered (BIC) of cultural interest, in the category of monument. The building is a fortified peninsula in the shape of a star, La batería costera del Cardenal is located in the Ría de Corcubión, nestled in the Punta do Cantelo, in the Province of A Coruña, municipality of Corcubión.
In the seventeenth century, two fortifications were erected in the Ría de Corcubión to defend the port, the Cardenal and the Príncipe, due to the constant threat of privateers and raids. It was built in stone, with materials from local quarries, as well as the coastal batteries of that time, what was intended is for the piece to blend into the environment and thus surprise the attackers, preserving the security of expeditions to northern Europe or the Mediterranean, as well as preventing looting of inland cities.
Rugged coastal battery, with irregular plant combining three batteries off the coast and two asymmetrical hydrants on the ground front. The North battery has three guns, the East battery seven, and the South battery five. In addition, two more guns open at the two corners, making a total of 17 guns, so since it only had 12 guns, some of them would remain uncovered. It occupies an area of approximately 2,800 m2.
Inside the compound, surrounding the military courtyard, there is an open U-shaped building, which now has a residential function with 8 bedrooms and oil heating, but which originally was barracks for troops, warehouses, dustbin and other dependencies of a castle. It also had orchards in the interior and a well of fresh water for subsistence in case of siege.
The Cardinal’s castle was burned by Napoleonic troops in 1809, and since then it has not been used again by state bodies. The Fortress of the Cardinal remained in public hands, in a ruinous state, until it was sold out in 1950. The administration passed into private hands that rehabilitated it and for this reason the property is in an excellent state of conservation.
The true value of the Castillo del Cardenal lies in the fact that no new 18th-century castles can be built, nor three centuries of history made. El Castillo del Cardenal, offers us the possibility of developing a project of excellence: a luxury boutique hotel, a private club, a gastronomic restaurant of reference, a wellness and spa space, a glazed gallery integrated with absolute respect in the historic courtyard, a high-end glamping area, spaces for exclusive events and other tourist, cultural or institutional uses that may be authorized. However, it would be a mistake to define this asset solely for its possible uses.
El Castillo del Cardenal, the real project consists in creating an international destination, a place where heritage, architecture, landscape, gastronomy and culture are one. It has an urban estate, with its annexes and joined land, next to the estuary of Corcubión, has a surface area of 24,134 m2. This estate has a private line of three-phase light that serves the castle.
It also has rustic pine forest land called "Prado do Castelo" or "Prado do Castillo", has an area of 7,437 m2. Rustic. Pine forest called "Pinar del Castillo" of c (2,604 m2). Rustic. Pine forest called "Castelo", of 8,300 m2, surrounded by a low wall. It has its own entrance by a path to the northwest of the estate and that starts on the road to Redonda.
