Jávea is a coastal town and municipality in the comarca of Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, Valencia, Spain, by the Mediterranean Sea. Located on the slopes of the Montgó massif, behind a large bay and sheltered between two rocky promontories, the town has become a very popular small spa town and commercial city. Half of its resident population and more than two-thirds of its annual visitors are foreigners.
History: The area was first inhabited in prehistory, 30,000 years ago, by the people of the Montgó caves. Later settlers included Stone and Bronze Age peoples, Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Visigoths, Germanic peoples, Carthaginians, and Moors. Roman fishing boats used the port, and there is evidence dating to the Roman occupation of Xàbia in the 2nd century BC, making Xàbia the oldest known Roman site on the coast with a commercial port for fish and minerals. The Christian Visigoth monks arrived in Xàbia and founded the Sant Martí monastery, which probably gave its name to the cape in the area known as Cap San Martí. In the 16th and 17th centuries, pirate raids were frequent, so a wall was built around the city to protect it. The wall was later torn down, and today a replica exists in its place in certain sections.
