Historical data of Boal
Etymologically, the name Boal comes from the Latin term "boalar,” common land intended for grazing livestock, a natural environment existing in the area and the place where the first church of the parish was built, consecrated to Saint James the Apostle.
1. Prehistory and Ancient History
The first preserved cultural manifestations correspond to the Prehistory period, Advanced Neolithic, 3rd millennium BC, and consist of a series of tumuli or individual tombs belonging to livestock-raising populations that inhabited the region, located mainly in the higher parts, almost always above 800 meters. They are found mainly in two areas: one that begins in the S.W. of the municipality and, following an N.E. direction, reaches the boundary with the municipality of Coaña, where, among others, are the remains of the tumuli of Chao das Gavitas, Santín, Trapella, Caho das Llagúas, and Peña de Xugos; the other, on the S.E. edge, with the dolmen of Cornías, the Campo Maún tumulus, and others.
The only site corresponding to the Bronze Age is the pictorial set of the "Cova del Demo,” exceptional in Cantabrian rock art, consisting of schematic figures painted in mineral red.
2. Middle Ages
The first written references about our territory appear in the late 11th century and early 12th century, in the documentation of the church institutions of the time, specifically in the "Libro Registro" of the Monastery of Corias and in the "Libro de los Testamentos" of the Oviedo Cathedral.
3. Modern Age
The fundamental event takes place at the beginning of this historical period and consists of the process of divesting and selling the parishes, followed by the later establishment of the Municipality of Boal. This process begins with the agreement between Philip II and Pope Gregory XIII in April 1574, through which the breakup of the Church’s assets is authorized.
19th Century
At the beginning of the century, Boal was affected by the events of the Peninsular War; the town was invaded on March 19, 1809 by the soldiers of Maurice Mathieu, who caused destruction, looting, and deaths—deaths clearly recorded in the parish archives of Boal—and which resulted in the number of people who died in that year, in all respects, totaling 111, compared with 62 the previous year.
20th Century
There is no doubt that the demographic and economic crises described in the late 19th century found an escape valve in emigration to overseas territories. Emigration that began early for a municipality like Boal given its geographical location, since by 1859 we already have testimony of five men who, at the ages of 14 or 15, emigrate to Cuba. The peak period of emigration is from around 1880, and especially of young men bound for Cuba, although female emigration bound for Buenos Aires must also be taken into account.
