The castle has an enclosed courtyard with walls and battlements, as well as a square watchtower, which give it a stately and fortified character. This property was the former residence of the Viscount of Vilanova de Cabanyes, a prominent figure in the region, whose lands stretched from Torre Valentina in Playa de Aro to La Bisbal.

Several publications and books recount the Viscount's public and private life, including his participation in the Carlist Wars, his friendship with General Weyler, governor of Cuba, and darker episodes such as counterfeiting and a supposed faked death.
