Description
It is in 1916 when the Soler-Miró family, originally from Barcelona, decides to move to Sant Quintí de Mediona. The father, Esteve Soler, was a wealthy textile industrialist who had made his fortune during the years of the First World War thanks to contracts with French companies.
That is how the story of the Els Soler house of Sant Quintí begins. With 390 m², it is divided across different floors. Tired of the hustle and bustle of Barcelona and drawn by the vineyards of the Penedès, he bought the house for its elegant geometric spaces, its large garden of more than 100 m² designed to echo the birds and the peace brought by the wind as it passes through the plots, and a style clearly Noucentista.
We continue on the street level floor and go through the forged-iron doors with glass. The coach houses come into view. With space for three cars in a row, it is the prelude to the courtyard. His wife, Montserrat Miró, was a cultivated and refined woman, passionate about painting and poetry.
Both shared the idea that Catalunya should be modern, civic, and Mediterranean, and they dreamed of an orderly, educated, and beautiful society. We go down to the cellars, which are currently turned into a space for concerts and small poetic evenings.
The street-level floor is complemented by a large living-dining room-kitchen with access to the courtyard and a reading room. We go up one more floor. The staircase is part of the charm, which we pass through to reach the first floor. An independent apartment has been created there today.
One May afternoon, a horse-drawn carriage arrived at the house. Eugeni stepped down from it, a friend of Esteve since the times when both frequented Barcelona’s intellectual circles. This is where, as a guest of honor, he stayed throughout an entire summer.
The floor features 3 large bedrooms plus a study that connects with the living room. During his stay, he marveled at the quiet of the Penedès—its ordered hills—the golden light of the late afternoon, and the architecture of the Els Soler house of Sant Quintí, perfectly harmonized with the ideals of Noucentisme: proportion, clarity, reason, and beauty.
One of the things he liked most was to lean out through the window arches and talk about art, creating a cultivated and modern Catalan culture. One of those days when the stillness enchanted him, and looking out through the kitchen window, Eugeni wrote a piece inspired by Sant Quintí de Mariona in which he described a “catalan house of order and beauty, where intelligence and the vineyard coexist in Mediterranean harmony.”
