The fortified village dates from the 1300s, when James the II of Aragon ordered the construction of a watchtower and castle to guard the coast. In the modern era, the village’s port, Cala Ratjada, has become a tourist destination and a popular location for summer homes. The municipality has a group of small hamlets in the surrounding hills and larger communities in the coves and bays along the coastline, including Cala Lliteres, Canyamel, Font de sa Cala, Son Moll, sa Pedruscada, es Provençales, es Carregador, Cala Mesquida, and Cala Gat.

Cala Ratjada: Under the administration of Capdepera, in the northeastern part of Mallorca, it lies about 80 kilometers from Palma. It is the main coastal port and tourist center of the municipality. Tourism began in these lands in the 1960s; before that, Cala Ratjada was a small fishing port. The original port still exists today, but it has become more of a destination for tourist and sports boats than a fishing port.

Cala Ratjada is the closest point between Mallorca and Menorca, which is why it has played an important role in the island’s economy over the years. On clear days, it is possible to see the island of Menorca and the city of Ciutadella.

This area of Mallorca is known for its rugged coastline and the large number of coves. Capdepera has about 40 kilometers of coastline with beaches that mostly have the Blue Flag for quality awarded by the Foundation.

Nearby beaches: La Pedruscada, Son Moll, Cala Ratjada, Cala Gat, l’Olla, Cala Lliteres, Cala Agulla, and Cala Moltó.

Also notable in the area are the marina, the Capdepera lighthouse, and the March Palace, property of the March family.
