Located in the north-west of Mallorca, Sóller became prosperous thanks to its abundance of citrus crops. In the 19th century, when the area was isolated from the rest of Mallorca by mountains, oranges were exported to France from the Port of Sóller. A large number of Sollers emigrated to France and returned to the island with great fortunes, which they invested in building some of the magnificent modernist buildings that can be seen in the town centre today.
The main square, Plaza de la Constitución, is the heart of Sóller. It is full of bars and cafés and crowned by the most representative view of Sóller: the majestic church of Sant Bartomeu. The tram that connects Sóller with the port passes through the centre of this splendid square.
This is a perfect place for hikers and Nordic walking enthusiasts, as the GR221 long-distance trail, also known as the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, crosses the Serra de Tramuntana, passing through Sóller. Amateur cyclists can take on the great challenge of the Coll de Sóller (the tunnel is closed to cyclists), and mountain bikers also have spectacular terrain to enjoy.
