Galilea is a small hamlet in the Sierra de Tramontana and is governed by the municipality of Puigpuñent. The village sits in an elevated position with views of the mountains and of the valleys to the south of the village towards Palma de Mallorca. Only 18km from the capital Palma the population is small with less than 500 people as permanent inhabitants. The landscape of terraces and small fields dates to the Islamic period agriculture has been the basis of the economy for centuries based on the cultivation of almond, olive, and carob trees. In the 19th century like many of the villages in the Sierra de Tramontana the village provided firewood, charcoal and ice collected in snow houses for the wealthy inhabitants of Palma de Mallorca. Isolated and overlooked as tourism grew in Mallorca, the local town hall and the Consell of Mallorca made an investment in the infrastructure of the village with investments into modern environmentally and sustainable drinking and wastewater networks.
