Manor House History:
The House-Palace of the Romeu is a small urban palace located in the historic center of Valencia, very close to the Cathedral and the former noble quarter of the Seu-Xerea.
The house belonged to the noble Romeu family, a lineage documented in Valencia since the 14th century. The first member mentioned in the city was Gil Jiménez Romeu, a knight who took part in the Valencian Courts of 1329; his son Juan Jiménez Romeu was a jurat of Valencia in 1332 and Lord of Alcácer.
The current building has roots prior to the 18th century, although it was extensively renovated around 1858 by Valencian architect José Zacarías Camaña Burcet, which explains its 19th-century appearance.
Architecture
This is a relatively narrow palace-style house, typical of Valencia’s urban nobility.
Main features:
Three main levels: ground floor, mezzanine, main floor, and second floor.
Stone lintel doorway with the Romeu coat of arms in relief over the lintel.
Long wrought-iron balcony on the main floor.
Simpler balconies on the second floor.
The Coat of Arms
The heraldic relief over the door is protected as a Property of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1996. It represents:
a black eagle on a field of silver,
three chained stakes,
and a flory cross in the other quarter, with a border of lozenges (asps).
Salvador Street is part of the historic layout of the Via Augusta, which crossed the Roman city of Valencia, Valentia.
The La Seu neighborhood is the historic and oldest core of Valencia, located in the Ciutat Vella district. Characterized by its narrow medieval streets, it is home to the Cathedral (La Seu), the Basilica of the Virgin, and the Generalitat, serving as the city’s religious, political, and monumental center.
It is right in the center, bordering the neighborhoods of El Carmen and Xerea. It is a pedestrian area, highly touristic, filled with small squares, cafés, and traditional restaurants.
