Altea is one of the most beautiful villages in the Mediterranean. It is a picturesque tourist town on the Marina Baja coast of the Gulf of Altea, south of Calpe and north of Alfaz del Pi. The city is part of the Douzelage, an association of sister cities of the European Union, and is the official cultural capital of the Valencian Community. The long history of Altea includes agriculture, fishing, trade and demography in the 18th century, and during the 19th century official and commercial life moved to the urban centre by the sea. Altea is known for its pebble beaches and narrow streets with white houses and tiled roofs. Cobblestone paths lead to the Catholic church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, symbol of Altea, with its blue and white dome often called the “Dome of the Mediterranean”. The ruins of the Fort of Bernia (16th century) and the watchtowers of Bellaguarda and La Galera (16th-17th centuries) remain.
