L'Escala is a municipality located on the coast of the province of Girona, on the Costa Brava, comprising several population centres: L'Escala, Sant Martí d'Empúries, Riells and Montgó. There are beaches close to the urban area, such as Les Barques, as well as others reached via long promenades running alongside them, such as La Platja de Riells. Very nearby is the bustling Port de la Clota, currently L'Escala's fishing and leisure port.
