In fact, it was very common in Villena during the 19th and 20th centuries to build cave houses in the upper part of the historic center. These were built by humble citizens, attaching the houses to the rock of the Sierra de la Villa itself and excavating the limestone from it to shape rooms that were used for various purposes: rooms, pantries, etc."

Villena is a historic town, known well for its stunning castle, and wine bodegas it is renowned for fantastic wine.

There are bus routes, and train routes to Alicante, and the high speed railway link to Madrid.

The town celebrates many festivals throughout the year, as well as a medieval fair, Moors and Christians there is a week long rock festival, and a variety of live concerts from international artists. The reformed bull ring is now used for cultural activities.

If motorsports are of interest then there is also a go cart track 5 minutes drive away where it is not unusual to find high level motorcycle riders including some Moto GP stars practicing from time to time, and regular national level motorcycle racing events. Within this complex there is a fabulous restaurant, bars, disco and various attractions.
