Calpe is dominated by the imposing image of the Rock of Ifach. Calpe sits on the shores of the Mediterranean, surrounded by a landscape of mountains and vineyards. Many ancient civilisations settled in this town in the Marina Alta region of Alicante, and its history is narrated by remains it preserves, including the Roman baths “Baños de la Reina” (Queen’s Baths).
The marina, the promenade and eleven kilometres of coastline, marked by cliffs, beaches and coves, are among the main attractions. The Rock of Ifach, a huge calcareous rock, 332 metres high, penetrates the sea and gave the town its name. The area has been declared a nature reserve due to its botanical and faunal diversity.
The best views of Calpe and its coastline are seen from the top of the rock, accessible through guided tours at the park. The mild climate and the orography of the area make this town an ideal destination for everyone, from those seeking beaches and sun to fans of outdoor sports.
Refreshment kiosks and equipment-hiring stands for windsurfing boards and jet-skis are located along the beaches of La Fossa and Arenal. Among the quiet coves in the bay is Les Bassetes, famous for its seabed and crystal waters. Other coves such as La Manzanera and Les Urques are also highly regarded for their beauty, suitable for sailing and scuba diving.
Outdoor sport enthusiasts can climb the Rock of Ifach or go potholing in the Barranc del Mascarat and the Oltá Mountain.
History and architecture
Calpe was inhabited by many different Mediterranean cultures. The present town of Calpe was established in the area surrounding the Rock. Its history is narrated by the remains it preserves, including the Baños de la Reina (Queen’s Baths) from Roman times.
The historic quarter is bordered by old walls erected in the 15th century. Next to the Moorish quarter of El Arrabal, part of the medieval walled precinct is preserved, including some fronts and the large Tower of Peça. Nearby is the parish church devoted to the Virgin of the Snow, dating back to the 15th century, the only Gothic-Mudejar temple in the Region of Valencia.
Other examples of religious architecture include the hermitages of La Cometa and San Salvador, both from the 17th century. The rural tradition can be seen in its outskirts, with hillsides covered with vineyards and local architecture such as Casa Nova and Pou Salat.
Gastronomy, holidays and the outskirts
Calpe’s traditional gastronomy is mainly based on rice and fish. Dishes include Arròs del Senyoret and other rice dishes with beans and turnip, as well as octopus casserole and Llauna de Calpe (fish stew).
The local cultural calendar includes fiestas and leisure activities throughout the year, from Carnival to Fallas de San José (March 19), the Bonfires of San Juan (June 24), and the festival of Moors and Christians (October). The local holiday devoted to the Virgen de las Nieves takes place on August 5.
From Calpe, excursions can be made to other towns on the Costa Blanca, including Denia and Jávea to the north, and the Montgó Nature Reserve. To the north is Teulada, famous for its muscatel vineyards. Altea is dominated by the blue dome of the church of Virgen del Consuelo. L’Alfàs del Pi meets the sea at the beach of Albir. Benidorm, known for its excellent beaches, is one of the main tourist destinations in Alicante.
