Description
A 5-bedroom chalet located in Sierra de Altea, next to the Don Cayo golf club and the Campomanes marina, 3 km from the town of Altea and its beautiful beaches.
The picturesque tourist city of Altea is located in the Marina Baixa region, on the Mediterranean coast of the Gulf of Altea, south of Calpe and north of Alfaz del Pi. The long mountain range of Sierra Bernia separates Calpe from Altea.
The city is part of the Douzelage, the sister cities association of the European Union, and is the official cultural capital of the Valencian Community.
Very calm and welcoming, Altea has always attracted bright and creative people, and in the mid-20th century there was a whole colony of artists, authors, and musicians who turned the city into a bohemian place.
There is a large number of art galleries and craft workshops with ceramics and jewelry. And, in its cultural center, the Palau de Altea—where performances were given by Montserrat Caballé and Rostropovich—concerts by major orchestras are scheduled, as well as opera and pop stars from all over the world, along with exhibitions and theatrical productions.
Altea has a Faculty of Fine Arts of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche.
Curiously, in honor of the city, Seat named one of its sports minivan models as Seat Altea.
The city name most likely comes from the Greek Althaia, which means “I cure,” or from the Arabic word aṭṭaláya (atalaya).
During Muslim rule, Altea belonged to the taifa of Denia until it was reconquered by Christian troops in 1244, under the command of Jaime I of Aragon.
The 18th century in Altea was marked by an agricultural, fishing, commercial, and demographic boom. And during the 19th century, official and commercial life moved to the urban center by the sea.
Altea stands out from the rest of the towns of the Costa Blanca for its pebble beaches and its narrow streets with white houses covered in tiled roofs, so reminiscent of the white Andalusian village as of snow.
Paved paths, located on the slopes of the Old Town, lead to the Catholic Church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, which has become a symbol of Altea. Its blue and white dome is often called the “Dome of the Mediterranean”.
The ruins of the 16th-century Fuerte de Bernia, and the Bellaguarda and La Galera watchtowers (16th–17th centuries) have survived to this day.
In Altea there is Spain’s first Orthodox church, the Templo del Arcángel San Miguel. It was built with money from the parishioners who live in Altea Hills, one of Altea’s residential areas with the highest purchasing power. One third of the foreigners here are Russian.
In addition, the city’s properties are bought mainly by British, German, and Scandinavian buyers.
Their choice is not surprising: calm and serene, Altea attracts lovers of peace and privacy.
