The town has been slowly developed since the 60s, but the real development started to take place in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This is when complexes such as San Marino, Laderas del Palm Mar and Cape Salema were built, bringing the town more into the public eye and, as such, more property buyers started to flock to the area.

The main road in Palm Mar runs past bars and restaurants down to the sea front, where there is a natural beach that is part rocky, part stony, and part sandy, popular with those living in the town who swim and sunbathe.
